KU Department
of Dietetics and Nutrition

Dietetics is defined as the science of managing food and nutrition to promote health. Registered Dietitians (RD) are food and nutrition experts who have completed the required training and passed national registration exam for Registered Dietitians.

KU's programs are nationally recognized for excellence in education and research in the field of dietetics and nutrition. As a unit of the School of Allied Health, the KU Department of Dietetics and Nutrition is located on the University of Kansas Medical Center campus in Kansas City, Kan. where students benefit from the opporunity to interact with a large number of health care professionals and leading researchers in real-world environments.

D&N Faculty Member Receives Distinguished Teaching Award

Adrienne Baxter, MS, RD, LD, was awarded the 2009 Stata Norton Distinguished Teaching Award whichrecognizes demonstrated excellence in teaching and outstanding contributions to the profession. Dietetics students and peers respect Baxter's abilities as an educator and leader. Her positive "can-do" attitude and tireless energy motivates students to strive for achievement of their professional goals.

KU offers the following degree programs in the fields of dietetics and nutrition:

Dietetic Internship Graduate Certificate prepares graduates for entry into a career as a Registered Dietitian. A Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited Didactic Program in Dietetics is required to begin this program. Upon completion of the requirements for the Dietetic Internship, students are eligible for the registration examination to acquire the RD credential.

Master of Science in Dietetics and Nutrition is designed for professionals in nutrition and other careers with a science background. There are many benefits of this degree, such as Increased salary, expanded job opportunities and increased knowledge in the science of nutrition. Students often choose the MS program as an avenue toward a doctoral degree in nutrition, medicine or other health sciences.

Courses in nutrition are also available to students who are not seeking a degree or working professionals interested in continuing education.

To conduct research in nutrition science and dietetics, and to produce exemplary graduates empowered to influence human health.
